Some say AI has little to offer math researchers. Others believe it’s only a matter of time before it takes over the field entirely. We’re confident the future lies somewhere in between — where AI becomes a valuable tool that mathematicians use in their daily work. The methods and tasks AI already supports were the focus of the AI in Mathematics course at Stevens Institute of Technology and Bar-Ilan University, a program developed by our team in collaboration with colleagues from both institutions. - 50 Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD students joined across both campuses. - We covered classical machine learning, neural networks, transformers, LLMs and mathematical reasoning, reinforcement learning and more — all with a focus on what’s actually useful for math researchers today. - The main goal was to help students understand how AI can support their work in mathematics research — by exploring its potential to assist with automatic verification, algorithmic optimization, searching for examples and counterexamples, retrieval and more. - Students experimented with AI on real-life scientific projects — and some even applied it to their own math research. Topics included premise retrieval for ML-guided theorem proving, using reinforcement learning to discover new Hadamard matrices and predicting gene-metabolite links with GNNs.
